Sizzling Successes: Synergy Squad
At Words First, we believe in recognising the incredible work of our team members. The Synergy Squad, led by Team Leader Erantia, has been making an impact through their dedication, expertise, and innovative approaches. From research contributions to problem-solving in schools, training delivery, and personal achievements, here’s a look at their recent successes.
Expanding Knowledge Through Research and Conferences
Anastasios, an Occupational Therapist, attended the OT Show in the autumn.
He also submitted an abstract to two conferences (one in Cyprus and one in Greece) based on a qualitative study conducted during last year’s OT team day. His research, Therapists’ Perspectives on the Concepts of ‘Occupation’ and ‘Occupation-Focused Practice’ in Mainstream and Special Schools in the UK, is under review, with feedback coming soon.
Training Future Leaders in OT Practices
Caitlin, an Occupational Therapist, delivered joint training with another Words First OT team member on key topics including:
- The role of OT in college settings
- Sensory Integration and sensory circuits
- Promoting independence in toilet training
Erick, another Words OT, joined Caitlin to deliver a training session focused on the role of an OT in the EYFS setting, covering:
- Milestone development
- Toileting and starting potty training
- Sensory Integration and strategies for regulation (including sensory circuits and sensory breaks)
- Sleep
Making a Difference in Charity and Client Confidence
Ebonee, an Occupational Therapist, and her daughter took on the 100 Miles in October challenge and raised £470 for the National Autistic Society. This was a meaningful achievement for her and her family.
She also received a thoughtful gift from a young client who was initially anxious and struggled with regulation. Through creative, sensory-friendly interventions, including space and dinosaur-themed activities, he has grown in confidence. He now walks into sessions with enthusiasm, and his latest gift – a handmade car – is a reminder of his journey.
Creating Innovative Movement Breaks at Poppyfield School
George, an Occupational Therapist, worked with the team at Poppyfield School to address limited movement opportunities for students. They developed corridor movement break visuals to help students self-regulate.
- Wall push-ups, stretches, and jumps encourage movement.
- A figure-eight visual guides calming breathing exercises.
- Instructions empower students to complete exercises independently.
This simple yet effective solution is already making a difference.
Driving Impactful EHCP Support in Schools
Illian, a Speech and Language Therapist, received recognition from the ARP Lead at Fielding, who said: “Illian is a valued member of our team. Though I don’t often see her due to the nature of my role, I know from feedback how valuable her work is. She ensures EHCP SaLT targets are being met, either personally or by guiding us in what needs to be done.”
This is a testament to Illian’s expertise and impact.
Developing a Comprehensive Feeding Programme for Families
Lina, a Speech and Language Therapist, developed a feeding programme at one of her schools to support parents in making mealtimes a positive experience.
This resource includes:
- Sensory activities for food exploration
- Postural control strategies for mealtime success
- Food chaining worksheets
- Tips for stress-free family meals
Her work is making a real difference to families navigating feeding challenges.
Strengthening Student Outcomes Through Expertise
Mukta, a Speech and Language Therapist, received positive feedback from Thames Valley School:
“Since joining us, Mukta has quickly become a valued team member, building strong relationships with staff, students, and families. Her professionalism, expertise, and dedication to improving student outcomes are evident in every aspect of her work.”
A well-deserved recognition of Mukta’s commitment and contribution.
It’s inspiring to see the impact our team members are making. Their dedication and expertise continue to shape the lives of students, families, and professionals alike.
