Moments That Matter: What SENCOs Say Makes Their Role Worthwhile

As part of our first SENCO Celebration Week at Words First, we wanted to focus not just on the pressures of the role, but on the moments that keep SENCOs going.

In conversations with the wonderful SENCOs we work alongside, many spoke about specific moments that stay with them. Often small on the surface, but significant in their impact. These are the moments that carry SENCOs through demanding days and remind them why they do what they do.

Seeing a child settle, grow, or succeed

For many SENCOs, the most rewarding moments come from seeing change over time. This might be a child settling into school, engaging in learning, or feeling more confident and understood.

One amazing SENCO from a partner school shared:

“Seeing a child who was struggling begin to feel safe and able to learn makes everything feel worth it.”

Progress is not always quick or straightforward. Fantastic SENCOs spoke about how important it is to notice and hold onto these moments, especially for children who have faced barriers for a long time.

Advocating successfully for a child or family

SENCOs also spoke about moments where advocacy led to a real shift for a child or family. This might involve securing the right provision, adjusting support, or helping families navigate complex systems.

Another SENCO we spoke to told us:

“When you know you have helped a family feel heard, or helped a child access the support they need, it really matters.”

These moments often happen quietly, but their impact can shape a child’s experience of school for years to come.

Building trust with families

Several SENCOs described how important it feels when relationships with parents and carers begin to strengthen. Trust builds over time through listening, consistency, and following through on what has been promised.

One brilliant SENCO shared:

“When a parent tells you they feel supported or reassured, that stays with you.”

These moments highlight the relational heart of the role and the value of being a steady, reliable point of contact for families.

Supporting staff to feel more confident

Many SENCOs spoke about moments of impact through their work with staff. This might involve helping a teacher see a pupil differently, supporting a teaching assistant with practical strategies, or embedding inclusive practice across a class or year group.

As one SENCO explained:

“When staff feel more confident and less overwhelmed supporting pupils with SEND, it makes a real difference to everyone.”

These moments show how SENCOs influence whole-school practice, not just individual pupils.

Knowing you made a difference, even quietly

Not all important moments are visible or celebrated. Several SENCOs spoke about quieter successes that often go unnoticed by others.

One SENCO told us:

“A lot of the work is invisible, but you know when you have made a difference.”

These moments may never appear in data or reports, but they sit at the heart of why SENCOs continue in the role.

Why these moments matter

SENCOs work within complex systems and under significant pressure, but these moments provide purpose and motivation. They show the impact SENCOs have on children, families, and school communities, even when that impact is not immediately visible.

As part of SENCO Celebration Week, we want to recognise and celebrate these moments. They speak to the care, commitment, and skill SENCOs bring to their role every single day.
