Hello, my name is Emily.
I qualified as a Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) in 2015 at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. I have experience working in multiple settings, including village hospitals, private practice, assessment clinics, and delivering services across various mainstream and specialist schools in London.
I am passionate about working with young students with a variety of speech, language, and communication differences – particularly supporting their speech, language, and literacy development. I have a special interest in understanding the impact of sensory processing on communication and hope to grow my clinical skills in this area further.
I am also passionate about forming positive and trusted relationships with students, staff, and the high calibre of colleagues we get to work with in the team. There is great reward in seeing a student as thrilled to work with me as I am to work with them!
In my spare time, I can be found exploring the countryside on my bicycle, attempting watercolour paintings, or negotiating another houseplant with my husband!
The Words First value that resonates most with me is collaboration and support. Starting my career with the Words First family over six years ago, I was truly inspired by the guidance and willingness of the team to share ideas, resources, knowledge, and clinical experiences. This has shaped the therapist I am today.
It seems only natural that I now find myself in the role of onboarding lead and clinical supervisor, as this vital piece of work has the potential to change a new therapist’s journey and have a lasting impact on the young students we get to work with. What a privilege!
