Hello, my name is Amy.
In 2003, I qualified in Occupational Therapy from Southampton University, UK. I have since specialised in working with children, young people, and families. Over the course of my career so far, I’ve gained valuable experience in the NHS, charity, education, and private sectors. I have completed additional training in seating and posture, assistive technology, and intervention methods such as the Cognitive Orientation to Daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP).
No matter what assessment or intervention method I use, my goal is always to maximise a child or young person’s participation in the activities they want or need to be able to do. I seek to empower them to be healthy, have fun, and build meaningful friendships along the way.
The Words First value that resonates the most with me is collaboration. With the child and family at the centre, it is vital that we work together with all relevant professionals and organisations to enable children to live their best lives.
I believe in lifelong learning, both in gaining more knowledge and sharing what I know with others. I have presented at national conferences, lectured at university, coordinated study days, and delivered online and in-person training. I am privileged to be in a position to supervise others and contribute to career development.
I am a strong advocate for the role of Occupational Therapy within the field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication. As Occupational Therapists, we can help children and young people communicate in a range of ways—using their hands, eyes, body movements, and non-verbal gestures. We are skilled in optimising the environment, posture, and positioning of the child to enable them to communicate in their preferred way.
I live with my husband and two sons, and when I’m not working, you’ll find me enjoying a kitchen disco, reading short stories, walking, eating, and chatting with my friends. The children I work with are often surprised to find out that I was once a panto cow and have jumped out of a plane!
