Hello, my name is Stephany.
I studied Speech and Language Therapy at Nova Southeastern University and qualified with a Master of Science degree in 2003. I also hold a BA in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Prior to joining Words First, I worked in the United States as Director of Rehabilitation Therapy Services at an Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospital in Chicago. My background includes extensive experience supporting adults in stroke and brain injury rehabilitation, and I’ve found that many of the strategies and interventions from this work translate effectively into school settings.
During my graduate programme in the U.S., I gained valuable hands-on experience in school-based practice, and I’m excited to soon be working in mainstream secondary schools here in the UK.
I have held leadership roles for over 22 years, advocating for high-quality services, developing programmes to enhance outcomes, and mentoring staff to deliver impactful, person-centred care. Throughout my career, I’ve remained passionate about working with people and supporting them to reach their full potential — whether that’s clients, families, or colleagues.
I’m really looking forward to working with my schools and feel fortunate to be part of several amazing teams — both at Words First and within the school communities I serve.
In my spare time, I enjoy exploring my new city, going on walks, spending time with my dog, and watching football matches with my spouse.
The Words First value that resonates most with me is: ‘Keep students at the heart of all our decisions.’ I appreciate that Words First is centred around children and young people. By putting their needs first, we can set meaningful, individualised goals that lead to better outcomes. This belief guides my approach to both assessment and intervention when working with young people.
