Hello, my name is Chanel.
I studied at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, where I qualified with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Occupational Therapy in 2019. I am currently completing my CLASI certification in Ayres Sensory Integration through ASI Wise, expanding my expertise in sensory integration and processing differences across the lifespan.
As an Occupational Therapist working with Children and Young People (CYP) with Special Educational Needs (SEN), I am passionate about empowering CYP with complex needs to achieve their full potential. I work across educational settings—from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to college—delivering individualised, evidence-based interventions tailored to each CYP’s unique strengths and challenges.
My experience includes working in multidisciplinary teams in hospital and school settings in South Africa, as well as supporting students in various education settings across the UK. I also proudly serve as a supervisor for Occupational Therapists at Words First, fostering professional development and championing the highest standards of care.
My special areas of interest include profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), complex physical needs, and sensory integration. My approach is holistic and student-centred, guided by a commitment to meaningful, research-driven interventions that create opportunities for growth and success.
The Words First value that resonates the most with me is being child- or young person-centred, and always having the student’s best interests at the heart of all our decisions. I believe every child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported in a way that honours their individuality. Being part of their journey as they grow and develop into their fullest potential truly brightens my day. I love celebrating every success—no matter how big or small!
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, travelling, taking photos, and baking. If you called my best friend and asked them to describe me, I think they’d say I’m fun, creative, and a great baker.
