Play Therapy
Enabling a child’s expression and exploration
Play therapy is a combination of counselling and psychotherapy in a safe and therapeutic environment in which children (typically aged 3-12 years) can express themselves freely, explore their feelings, and work through emotional, behavioural, or developmental challenges.
- Addressing a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, behavioural problems, relationship issues, self-esteem, and developmental challenges.
- Using various play materials such as toys, games, puppets, art supplies, and sand to facilitate the child’s expression and exploration.
- Use of play to build a trusting relationship with the child and help them develop new skills, coping strategies and resilience.
- Using play therapy for children who are going through difficult life transitions such as divorce, relocation, or a new school.
- Weekly 1-1 or group therapy sessions, lasting from several weeks to several months or longer depending on needs of the child/ren and working closely with their families.
- Play therapy that is based on current research, shaped and informed through unique collaboration with the Words First’s team of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Educational Psychologists and Counsellors.
